Reading Resources
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Along with our subject specific wider reading lists, we are proud to share the recommended reading list from the National Literacy Trust.
At Etone College, reading sits as the beating heart of our aim for ‘progress for all’. Research concludes that reading has a significant impact on academic outcomes and progress in every subject, sense of connection to others and the world, and wellbeing. At Etone, we place an exceptionally high importance on embedding reading through the curriculum; in form time readers, and through reading lessons in years 7 and 8.
Reading makes a huge contribution to the acquisition of cultural capital – the essential knowledge that pupils need to be educated citizens – through its introduction to people, places, experiences, and emotions. We have carefully selected a broad range of books which are read during form time, each both supports and extends the English curriculum; introduces pupils to ideas, characters, and stories to develop their knowledge of the world, and carefully teaches genre, author intention, and vocabulary.
We are delighted to stock a host of books in our school library which have been chosen carefully to suit a wide range of interests; some to stretch and challenge confident readers, some to engage reluctant readers. Pupils can select books to read, and borrow in library-based lessons as well as at breaktimes and after school, when our librarian is available to advise and support if needed. In our post-16 building, we have a library for pupils with a range of age appropriate fiction, alongside textbooks, periodicals, and wider reading materials.
We are really proud of our reading culture which offers a huge range of opportunities for pupils to participate in reading competitions, challenges, themed days and activities, book fairs, collaboration with partners including poets, authors, and Nuneaton Library through the year. Engagement in these challenges and competitions is rewarded with points which lead to achievement of our reading badges.
