International Day of Democracy

Schools across Matrix Academy Trust have been recognising the International Day of Democracy (15th September).

International Day of Democracy began in 1997 and it is based on the principles of equality, liberty, and justice. Democracy is essential for human rights and development.

Schools will be considering the meaning behind the international day, but also our modern British values – democracy and individual liberty.

We practise democracy in all of our schools by electing pupils to take on various roles and responsibilities on behalf of their peers including Form Captains, School Council Representatives, Personal Development Ambassadors, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors and Careers Champions.

We will be celebrating democracy in our schools across the week by voting for our peers and encouraging our pupils to take on these fulfilling roles for the academic year ahead.

The Abbey Theatre

On Friday, 6th September, a small group of Etone pupils attended The Abbey Theatre to watch ‘Odyssey’. They hugely enjoyed the parallel narratives of modern day and Britain and Greek myths including Pandora and Prometheus, the highly physical performance was thought-provoking and pupils reflected on the meaning of specific sections with focus. We were especially proud that they confidently asked intelligent questions in the Q&A session at the end of the performance.

Pupils were also excited to be invited onto the stage to meet the director and cast and to explore parts of the set at the end of the evening.

Team GB Success

We are once again proud to share that I McNeal has been selected to represent Team GB for the second year in a row at the European Tag Football championship. Despite a gruelling selection programme and tiresome training sessions, she has done a fantastic job showing the determination and dedication to perform at the highest ability. With her coach singling her out as a potential Olympic hopeful (Sport pending) we are so thrilled with our very own Team GB Etone Learner. Good luck I McNeal who has joined her team mates in Serbia as we eagerly await the results.

Oxford Triumph

Etone College is really pleased with our results and with all of our pupils entering promising next steps. A particularly exciting one is in the form of J Ferdinand who we are proud to share is off to study Mathematics at Oxford University. Whilst not the only student to go to Oxford from Etone, he is the first in a short while. However this represents the amazing journey Etone College has been on since joining the trust back in 2016. Jahbarhi achieved A*, A*, A, A to be accepted to study Mathematics at the prestigious institute. A big well done to him and all of our staff who have supported him on his journey from Year 7 to Y13.

Introducing the Tanner Building

Since Easter 2022 Etone has been a buzz with activity as the new build has come to fruition. On Monday 2nd September it was finally time to open the doors of the new build, which we can now announce is called the Tanner building, names after Dame Tanner, Etone Girls College’s first headteacher. With staff smartly dressed and a welcome speech from Lynsey it was a joy to meet and greet the dignitaries who joined us for the special day.

With a plaque dedicating the building to Dame Tanner and her original vision for education, it was time for our staff, prefects and visitors to enter the building to a fantastic reception of canapés and drinks. We hope you get a chance to come and visit the state of the art, sustainable build soon. You never know who might step through those doors in the next 50 years.

Introducing The Tanner Building

We are thrilled to announce the completion of a £7.5 million project in partnership with Nuneaton & Bedworth Council, resulting in the brand new 23-classroom teaching block at Etone College.

Named The Tanner Building, in honour of the school’s first Headmistress, this state-of-the-art facility is designed to provide the best possible learning environment for current and future generations of Etone College pupils.

Managed by Matrix Academy Trust, Alcema, and FSL Projects, this project stands as a beacon of sustainability. The building features energy-efficient LED lighting, controlled heating management systems, solar panels, and specialised agricultural landscaping, all contributing to the Trust’s commitment to achieving Net Carbon Zero by 2035. This initiative not only enhances the Trusts educational infrastructure but also supports our environmental sustainability goals.

We are looking forward to our pupils being able to make full use of the building and its facilities in September 2024 when we have our grand opening.

Etone College has been over-admitting pupils since 2018 at the request of Warwickshire School’s Admissions. The school is now significantly over net capacity and needs additional buildings so it can increase their Published Admission Number to 180 and maintain the high academic standards it currently offers, from Year 7 through to Year 13.

The new classroom block, costing an estimated £6.6 million in total, will allow the very popular school to meet the needs of local families whilst helping Warwickshire County Council meet its duty to secure sufficient school places. While the Council is contributing £4.6 million, the additional £2 million required will be covered by the school’s reserves.

Without the new build, the lack of capacity for growth within the current footprint of the school would prevent it from meeting the needs of local families because of space restrictions. Having been awarded planning permission by Warwickshire County Council for the new classroom accommodation, the school are intending to start the new build on site after Easter 2023, taking approximately 12-14 months to construct and handover.

The new building will be more energy efficient for future winter resilience, reducing energy consumption and carbon efficiency, utilising modern sustainability concepts, with old facilities replaced by modern education environments.

The additional classroom accommodation will transform Etone College and ensure the estate is fit for the future, supporting the school leaders in ensuring an exceptional education for every pupil.

Etone College is a proud member of Matrix Academy Trust, whose core value is Education Without Exception. Their bottom line is: if it wouldn’t be good enough for our relatives, it’s not good enough for our pupils.

GCSE Results Day 2024

What a journey it has been for our Year 11 pupils. Starting in the academic year 2019/2020 within six months of secondary school they were hit with the pandemic.

However, we are pleased to announce that despite any barriers placed in front of them our pupils have excelled with their GCSE results.

Once again provisionally returning positive progress 8 scores, Etone remains one of the schools in the UK to achieve this fete since recording on progress began. With the Class of 24 programme designed to ensure pupils receive dedicated support from their teachers and mentors across the year, it has certainly had an impact in ensuring our pupils succeed and indeed enabling us to achieve our main aim – Progress for All.

Overall the average grade for a pupil has increased showing the hard work and dedication our pupils have put in.

With a significant increase in the number of pupils achieving grade 5 and above in Maths and English, these results confirm Etone College as one of the leading schools in the area. With results up in all areas of analysis this is set to be one of the best years for Etone College and has ensured pupils have lived up to their expectations, with pupils achieving on average much better than their government projected targets.

Some particular highlights from our amazing pupils include:

Agata – Achieving and outstanding seven 9’s (Biology, Chemistry, French, History, Maths, Physics and Psychology) and two 8’s in her subjects across the board.

Sophie – Our 100% Year 7 to Year 11 pupil who achieves four 9’s (Double Science, Maths and Geography), two Distinction*’s (Art and Enterprise), two 8’s and a 7.

Lauren – With four 9’s (English Literature, English Language History and Psychology), a Distinction* (Art), two 8’s, a 7 and a 6, Lauren has secured her future into college as she decide on which career path to follow.

Maria – Two 9’s (English Literature, Psychology), a Distinction* (Child Development), five 8’s and a 7.

Bethan – Four 9’s (Biology, Chemistry, History and Physics), three 8’s, a 7 and a 6.

Umar – A 9 in Computer Science, four 8’s, a 7, a 6 and a five

With an increase in the number of 9’s achieved within subjects it shows how much effort our pupils have put in. Of course this is coupled with the dedicated support from their families and all of our Etone staff, without whom these results may not be all that is desired.

A big thank you to all our families and staff for their efforts and an even bigger WELL DONE to our pupils on this historic day.

Books for Big Change – National Literacy Trust

Books for Big Change – National Literacy Trust

The National Literacy Trust recognise that the transition from primary to secondary school is a big change. As a school, we work hard to support this transition and as such would like to share some information about recommended reads that might help to support transition.

Please find below a link to the titles recommended by the National Literacy Trust for transition.  They have included a range of titles and genres so that pupils can hopefully find something that is right for them.  Pupils will have a chance to read these books when they arrive at Etone as we will be ordering copies of our library and our lunchtime book boxes.

https://literacytrust.org.uk/resources/books-for-big-change-transition-to-secondary-school/

Do please also encourage your child to take part in the literacy and reading challenges that are part of their Passport to Etone. We are really looking forward to seeing what they have done over the summer when we return in September.
