School Council

School Council have been busy today meeting with the leaders for PSHE.  They have been discussing what they enjoy about their Learning for Life lessons and the key messages that have taken away to help them stay safe and healthy.  They were also discussing the topics that they think are really important to include for their age group as well as coming up with ideas to support Children's Mental Health Week. Talking to School Council and groups of pupils is so important to gather their views and provide pupils with the opportunity to tell us what they think works well in lessons. They also talked to us about the external speakers that they had enjoyed in PSHE. Next time School Council will be meeting to discuss healthy food choices and take part in some food tasting in the Cafe.

Road Safety Awareness Sessions for Years 12 and 13

On Monday 8th and 15th January we had the privilege of hosting informative and engaging road safety talks for our Year 12 and Year 13 students. These sessions were designed to raise awareness of the risks associated with driving, with a particular focus on the impact of drugs, alcohol, fatigue, and other factors that can significantly affect reaction speed, judgement, and overall safety on the road.

Students were encouraged to take part in discussions and interactive activities, making the sessions both educational and thought-provoking. Pupils found the talks rewarding and highly relevant, particularly as many are preparing to drive independently. We are delighted with the positive feedback and look forward to welcoming the team back again for future sessions

Student Careers Ambassadors Prepare to Support the Next Generation

Recently, selected students at Etone College took part in an exciting and informative training programme led by the Careers Hub, designed to prepare them for their role as Student Careers Ambassadors. The training focused on developing their understanding of the wide range of qualifications and pathways available to young people, enabling them to confidently support and mentor younger students in the future.

During the sessions, students explored different qualification routes, including GCSEs, A Levels, BTECs, T Levels, apprenticeships and other post-16 and post-18 options. The Careers Hub provided clear guidance on how these qualifications work, who they are suited for, and how they can lead to further education, training or employment. This ensured the ambassadors gained a well-rounded and up-to-date knowledge of the education landscape.

As well as learning about qualifications, students developed key communication and mentoring skills. They discussed how to offer impartial advice, share personal experiences appropriately and signpost younger students to reliable sources of support when needed. This training will allow them to act as positive role models and trusted peers within the school community.

The Student Careers Ambassadors will use their new knowledge to peer mentor younger pupils, helping them to understand their options and feel more confident when thinking about their futures. This peer-led approach is particularly valuable, as students often find it easier to engage in conversations with those who have recently faced similar choices themselves.

Etone College is proud of the commitment shown by the Careers Ambassadors and grateful to the Careers Hub for delivering such high-quality training. This initiative will play an important role in strengthening careers education across the school and empowering students to make informed decisions about their next steps.

Road to RIOT: Blast Off! Year 8 Students Reach for the Stars 🚀

Our Year 8 students recently embarked on an out-of-this-world adventure thanks to a visit from the Smallpeice Trust, taking part in an exciting STEM day titled “Road to RIOT: Blast Off!”

For the day, the classroom transformed into a buzzing mission control as students became teams of designers, aerospace engineers, landing gear specialists, and marketing executives. Their challenge? To plan a bold new planetary research expedition to a newly discovered world and design a lander capable of safely arriving on Mars.

Working in teams, students explored the real-world problems faced by space agencies, from protecting delicate scientific equipment during landing to creating eye-catching branding to “sell” their mission to potential sponsors. They sketched designs, tested ideas, solved engineering challenges, and presented their final concepts with confidence and creativity.

The day was packed with teamwork, problem-solving, and plenty of “aha!” moments as students discovered how science, technology, engineering, and maths come together in real careers. Most importantly, it sparked curiosity and showed just how exciting a future in STEM can be.

A huge thank you to the Smallpeice Trust for inspiring our young engineers and helping our Year 8 students truly blast off on their road to RIOT! 🌍✨

Prof Dr Gill Cooke

On 13th January, Etone Exceeding Excellence welcomed our first lecturer for 2026, Prof Dr Gill Cooke from Warwick University delivered an inspiring talk about the breadth of engineering, her unconventional career journey and quality assurance engineering.

Her talk was packed full of career advice and information, especially with regards to apprenticeship routes. Gill repeatedly reminded our pupils and carers of her roots in Nuneaton and the winding nature of her journey into academia.

Gill left listeners with clear top tips for a career in engineering:

1) Be an early adopter to maximise training opportunities and to build your reputation.

2) Be reliable, collaborative and deliver when you say you will.

3) Take every and all opportunities to build your transferable skills to maximise future options.

4) Create a LinkedIn profile and follow people whose careers you aspire to to build a network and develop your career aspirations.

5) If you’re not sure then research options.

6) Be prepared to adapt and weave and wind through your career to find your niche.

Creative Writing Workshop with Harriet Goodwin

On Monday, 12th January, we were delighted to offer Year 8 pupils fantastic sessions with author, Harriet Goodwin.  During her creative writing workshops, Harriet taught 'top tips' to make your writing jump off of the page using examples from novels which inspire her.  She said:

  • At the heart of every great story is a proble which needs to be solved.
  • The main character must care about solving the problem.
  • The start of the story needs to be as close to the key point of change as possible.

She then gave an other array of great tips for starting stories based on 'show not tell'.

In the afternoon, Harriet gave an author talk to the whole year group explaining the process of becoming an author; drafting and proofing; cover design and her inspiration from a dream, to treasure hauls, to Britain's Got Talent.  As usual, Year 8 were courteous and curious, asking an array of interesting questions.  The session culminated in harriet giving a demontration of operatic singing from her first career.

A competition inspired by Harriet's visit will launch this week in the library enabling pupils to practise their creative writing skills.  Exciting prizes are available, including books signed by Harriet.
