EEE

On Tuesday, 7th January 2025, pupils, parents and staff gathered to listen to Prof Dr Edward Guinan, a world famous astro-physicist.  Alongside his huge list of career achievements, Prof Guinan was part of the team who discovered rings around the planet Neptune. He currently teaches at Villanova University, Philadelphia and works with NASA.  His talk focused on a history of the planet Mars and his project to investigate whether people could live on Mars in the future and grow their own food.  Etone pupils are particularly fortunate to have access to a sample of the soil which Prof Guinan and his team have created, in partnership with NASA, to grow their own crops.

DMU Trip

A group of 54 Year 11 pupils from Etone College recently had the opportunity to visit De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester. The day began with a tour of the campus, where our pupils explored state-of-the-art facilities, including the impressive Vijay Patel Building, known for its creative arts courses. They visited several faculty buildings, gaining valuable insights into the wide range of courses and specialist academic environments on offer. A talk on student finance provided clear advice on managing university costs and accessing support, ensuring pupils felt informed about this important aspect of university life.

Whilst on tour pupils were an introduction to the university’s student support services, such as the Student Gateway, which offers help with money matters, welfare, and additional needs. Pupils discovered the variety of clubs and societies available at DMU, underlining the importance of extracurricular activities in shaping a well-rounded university experience. They also learned about different routes into university, including foundation years for those seeking alternative pathways. An informative Q&A session with current students gave pupils the chance to ask questions and hear first-hand about life at university, leaving them inspired and better prepared for their future education choices.

Mince Pies and Carols

On Wednesday we welcomed over 100 year 7 and 8 parents to the Etone College to attend our annual Mince Pies and Carols event. The performance is always well attended and this year was no different. With the choir singing some festive treats along with an audience rendition of Last Christmas there was fun aplenty. Whilst the joys of the singing were going on our Community Champions were being their amazing selves and delivering mince pies and yule logs to our guests, all the while raising funds for Save the Children. Bringing our total raised to over £350 for the charity this year. The event is an important aspect of our calendar as it helps to support our pupils and parents whilst raising funds and festive cheer all around. Thank you to all of those in attendance.

Terrific Teachmeets

At Etone we are dedicated to high quality professional development for all of our staff like most schools. However, our dual focus on wellbeing is what enables us to stand out and ensure we are a supportive and progressive environment in the education sector.

One of the corner stones of our CPD provision is the Christmas Teachmeet. The session features a unique blend of pedagodgy and wellbeing to provide staff a chance to share best practice and reflect on some of the high points across the year.

This year the focus was on reading with staff sharing some expert strategies to support the culture and use of reading in lessons. With some amazing ideas on offer, we know all staff will be trailing these in the new year.

Hot Chocolate

A truly festive feeling was delivered by our Etone Elect on Monday as they (along with Mrs Sweet) gave out hot chotolate and treats to their fellow Sixth Formers. The nice gesture was an opportunity to spread the season of goodwill and show some Christmas cheer as all enjoyed a drink, topped with whipped cream and marshmallows. The values that this showed embodies what it means to be an Etone Learner and an Etone Student Leader. We are proud of all of them – Well done Elect!
