Help Your Child Revise

On Wednesday 2nd December we were excited to host our Help Your Child Revise event for KS4 parents. With a packed out hall, the session gave us an opportunity to share with parents and carers the support pupils get at Etone college and explore some of the techniques and strategies that can be used for helping pupils prepare at home.

It is always a challenging time when pupils reflect on the expectations of exams be that mocks or the summer series for our Year 11,12 and 13 pupils. Using these support sessions the aim is to help provide a route for parents to help support their children in making the best choices possible and guiding them to success.

Whilst it will never be easy there are lots of things we as a school do and you as parents and pupils can do to reduce the pressures of exams. With Year 11 pupils recently receiving workshop assemblies on revision techniques and in the build-up to winter mocks it was an opportune time to provide parents with this session.

The feedback for the session itself was extremely positive and we would like to thank all who attended. We would also like to share the materials of the session and previous sessions here along with links to the revision sections of our website:

Sixth Form Halloween

On Wednesday 2nd November Sixth Form students celebrated Halloween with style by holding a Fancy Dress Competition and spooky cake sale.

Each time the students of the elect host an event they focus on raising funds for a local or national charity or good cause. This year the money raised will go to the Nuneaton Food Bank. Earlier this week it was reported in the Nuneaton News that demand for the foodbank was three times higher than supply allowed for. Therefore, it shows a very real need for support at this moment in time. With challenging times in the economy, it was great to see students give what they could to raise funds for the bank. With the first installment of £30 being added to across the year we look forward to raising even more.

Additionally, the fancy dress costume was a tough battle with bunnies, ghouls and even a modern take on Steve Jobs. However, Josh in Year 13 took the crown with his fantastic dinosaur costume. Needless to say, it was fierce and scary. Particular mention has to go to our runners-up Daphne and Velma although we were slightly disappointed there were no scooby snacks on offer.

Well done to all of our students who got involved with the theme of the day.

Careers Fair Triumph

Each year at Etone during the Autumn term we hold our Careers Fair. This is an opportunity for local and national employers to descend on our campus and show our pupils what the world of work has to offer them.

It is clear that in the times we live, strong prospects are important to ensure our pupils are competitive and go onto the prestigious destinations they seek. Therefore, it is never too early to start thinking about the future. This is something we were particularly impressed with when it came to our Year 7 pupils. Despite not having the experience of the fair before they conducted themselves with the utmost respect and decorum which really impressed our visitors.

For our Year 11 pupils there was food for thought when considering the next steps. With local colleges and apprenticeship programmes there was a chance to explore what these would have to offer. Of course, it was fantastic to see the high level of interest from our pupils for our own Sixth Form and Football Academy.

Across the fair, our pupils had the opportunity to talk to organisations and employers from a vast spectrum of industries including:

Warwickshire College Group
Coventry College
NWSLC
Etone College Sixth Form
Etone Football Academy
Loughborough University
University of Leicester
Coventry University
University of Birmingham
De Montfort University
Warwick University
University of Bath
Midland Group Training Services
WCAVA
Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centre
McLean Restaurants Ltd T/A McDonald’s
Puregym Nuneaton
British Army
Royal Air Force
Royal Navy
West Midlands Fire Service
Warwickshire Police
Local Health and Care Careers Hub
Compass Connect for Health – School Nursing Service
HMRC
Marsh McLennan
Deeley Construction
Willmott Dixon
Triton Showers
Family Law Consultants
Barr Beacon SCITT

Whilst it might not be possible to put each individual we would like to thank all of the organisations for attending and the kind words regarding our school and pupils. Without your involvement each year it would be hard to make the event the success it is.

Finally, a big congratulations to Mrs Barlow and Miss Moore for putting on such a great event. You have excelled yourself this year!

Eco-council

Introducing the Eco Council

This week we were excited to hold the first meeting of the Eco Council. Across the school it is made up of pupils in each key stage who hold environmental values closely in their beliefs.

Whilst Etone as a collective are passionate about preserving the environment and doing what we can to ensure we have minimal impact on this glorious world, these individuals are eager to make an impact.

This term the council are working towards achieving the Green Flag Award which is granted to schools that uphold the highest values of being ‘Eco Friendly’. In order to achieve this Etone will have to show how through our daily operations we hold environmental issues at the heart of the Etone Values. This is something we have done throughout Etone and hope that this year will mark this with the official awarding of the Green Flag.

We look forward to working with our Eco Council in the future.

ETONE-FOOTBALL

Etone Football Academy success!

In the first match of the year for our Etone Football Academy, our teams have once again soared to success. Despite always putting up a strong defence the team worked hard to achieve a landslide victory. Check out the match report below:

Cup – Match Report ⚽️⚽️⚽️

Etone started the game well pressing high and putting a lot of pressure on Port Vale pinning them into their own half. Within 2 minutes of play, a forward pass meant that Rowley went on to score taking the ball around the keeper. Shortly following Stenton hit home in the 5th minute and Etone – WBA really put a stamp on the game that they meant business.

The energy and willingness to play forwards backed up by good pressure to win 1st and 2nd balls meant Etone -WBA were in total control of the game.

Half time: Port Vale 0-4 Etone – WBA

As the second half started, a goal from Vorajee in the 46th minute continued Etone’s total dominance and ruthlessness in front of the goal.

A special mention to Sutton who scored from the penalty spot with a cleanly struck shot into the bottom left corner. The first years who stepped up were impressive and have continued to show real signs of confidence and a positive attitude towards the footballing side of the programme.

Exciting times ahead providing all players remain humble and hungry.

Full time: Port Vale 0-9 Etone – WBA

Macmillan Coffee Morning

On Friday 7th October we enjoyed hosting our annual Coffee Morning in support of MacMillan.

After an absence due to the pandemic, it was wonderful to be able to invite parents of Year 7 and 8 in to enjoy some treats baked by our very own Etone Bakers. Staff and pupils kindly donated cakes. Whilst in part to support the charity, the main aim is to win the Etone Bake-off 2022!

The event was really well attended and we would like to thank everyone who supported our Macmillan Coffee Morning be that staff, pupils or parents.  A total of £342.16 was raised for a very worthy cause and marks the first total on our Totaliser for this academic year. This year we are hoping to increase on last year’s amount and raise £3000 or more for charities and good causes.

Additionally, a big well done to Mrs Kaye-Shepheard and our choir for entertaining our parents/carers and to our prefects who were, as always, great Etone College role models.

A special thank you to those who donated cakes, whether shop-bought or homemade and the biggest congratulations goes to Mrs Emery who always delivers an event worth attending.

With regards to the ‘Bake Off’, we have some very talented staff.  The entries were amazing and we will let you all know our Bake Off 2022 Champion on Monday!

Well done Team Etone!

Open Evening at Etone

Once again on Thursday 29th September Etone College threw open its doors to prospective Year 7 pupils during their annual Open Evening event.

With a record attendance and the queuing public eager to see what Etone had in store for 2022 the site was opened at 5:00pm. First up was the choir led by Mrs Kaye-Shepheard who gave a wonderful medley including modern hits, classic greats and a very heartfelt renditions of Your Song. Mr Smith then addressed our visitors with a short presentation detailing some of the fantastic achievements made by our humble school. These included most recently;

  • Receiving the Quality in Careers Standard
  • Achieving Stonewall Kitemark for Diversity
  • Etone staff becoming National Professional Qualification Facilitators
  • Etone involvement with Education Endowment Fund research projects
  • An extremely positive Ofsted report
  • Continued fantastic results with pupils going off to prestigious destinations

After this, a number of our Year 11 Prefects and some nervous yet excited Year 7 gave some excellent insights to their time so far here at Etone. It was particularly poignant to hear from Year 11’s who are looking ahead to their next steps and to see the faces of the Year 7’s as they realise the support is always there at Etone to prepare them for something greater.

Following the presentation, the audience was given free rein to explore what was in store for them. There is always a buzz around the halls during our events but this year, in particular, was electric.

In English, guests were treated to a journey through literature from the delights of Dhal with fun activities and games to the festive ghouls from Dickens’ Christmas Carol.

MFL pulled out all of the stops delivering a delicatessen of deliciousness with samples foods from across the world including some very tasty bakes.

Sport were putting on a show as they performed their skills with Football and Netball being showcased and a display from the Football Academy with a perfect drill.

Over in History figures of the past ‘walked’ the red carpet as we met King Henry Viii and Elizabeth i. Whilst in Geography guests had the chance to practice their map skills and orientation mastery.

In Maths prospective pupils had the chance to get creative with numerical puzzles, games and designing their own numeracy inspired art pieces.

Science had excitement with their experiments creating electronic circuits, completing flame tests on metals and even dissecting a heart, clearly not one for the faint of heart.

Create showcased their talents with food, design and art creation where guests were affording the opportunity to get in touch with their creative sides.

Over in Express the Business and Computing team wowed with their innovative coding games, the dissection of the ‘Living Computer’ and the traditional Taste Testing where it was clear, whilst value for money is not always guaranteed by brands Cadbury Chocolate Fingers are the champions amongst biscuits.

Adding to the excitement our pupils got the chance to take part in Duke of Edinburgh with a stove-cooked hot dog and explore what delights the Combined Cadet Force had to share.

The evening was extremely well attended and feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Thank you to all of the pupils and parents who supported us for the event as we really could not have done it without you.

School Council

The Key Stage 3 pupils for School Council enjoyed a brunch with Mr Smith today.  He was very proud to be able to give out their School Council badges and congratulate them on their role. School Council plays an important part in school life at Etone College. They will discuss key issues during School Council time, collect and share the views of pupils in their form and feed back discussion points from School Council meetings.  Like all of our student leaders, they are ambassadors for our school.  Watch this space as the School Council themselves update you about what they have been doing and the impact that it has had.
