Every year, the Salvation Army organise a toy drive within Nuneaton community to collect and distribute presents for disadvantaged children, to help them celebrate Christmas. All donations are gratefully received and ensure Christmas joy is spread to those who are experiencing hardship. Children aged between 0 to 16 years of age are supported in this toy drive.

Etone College are actively participating in this by challenging forms to co-ordinate and donate as much as they can. There is no expectation to buy new goods, although this is welcome. Still boxed and packaged toys, nearly new books and boxed toiletry gifts are being donated by both students and staff to support the Salvation Army and to show students what a difference they can make to the community by engaging in active citizenship. All unwanted gifts are in perfect condition to become the perfect present for a child or teenager in our community. 

All form members and form representatives will be given house points for donations and organisation of donations. House point records will be made by form tutors and Heads of House and the winning form in each year group will win a class prize. Most importantly, our toy drive will show how positive an Etone Learner is in engaging with active citizenship via teamwork, communication, organisation, initiative and showing how caring and supportive they can be. Donations need to be taken to the stage on Thursday 14 th and Friday 15th December to ensure they are taken to the Salvation Army.

This term Etone College students have really shown Active Citizenship and highlighted the Etone Values with; raising money for Children in Need, and celebrating remembrance. However, it hasn’t stopped there. Each year we collect food on behalf of a local food bank to provide some basic essentials and festive treats to those around Nuneaton who are in need of a little Christmas spirit.

It is at this time of year that we are incredibly thankful for what we have and spend time considering those in less fortunate positions. So we are asking for donations to the Nuneaton Foodbank, which do a fantastic job of serving the community and making sure the food and items get to the people who need it most.

If you are able to take part please bring your food in on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th December and give it in at reception. The list of accepted items are on our poster. Our fantastic Charity Committee will be taking the food on Monday 12th December to the Foodbank to do the handover.

Top of the table clash saw Etone WBA host Nottingham Forest at the Pingles stadium. First 20 minutes took time for Etone to settle in against the forest wing backs who had time and space to get on the ball. The rewards came with a goal unmarked at the back post after a cross from the edge of the box. Etone grew into the game though and created chances of their own including a penalty that was saved shortly before the break. At half time although the Forest chances had been kept to a minimum they had the lead and doubled it in the 55th minute after a silly foul on the edge of the box resulted directly in a goal across the keeper. With it all to do Etone dug deep and the chances became coming thick and fast. A combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing kept Etone at bay till Zack broke through and made it 2-1 clipping over the sliding goalkeeper. Shortly after Cain went down for a clear penalty in the box allowing Josh to make no mistake this time bringing it back to 2-2. With 15 mins to play the Forest defense was settled in, only relived by kicking long to their striker. More chances came and went when finally against the run of play the Forest number 9 broke through the middle of the defence and was caught late for the 3rd penalty of the game. Struck against the underside of the bar and in was the last real action of the game resulting in a frustrating afternoon for Etone WBA and a 3-2 win for Forest on the road.

The Female side took on their 2nd fixture of the season after a huge gap between fixtures. You could easily expect some rustiness from the ladies but they immediately shown a sharpness seen from a team playing week on week. Starting the game on the front foot the ladies created chance after chance an dominated the first half with a very attacking display. After going 2-0 up Etone conceded a corner after a rare attack against them. Some sloppy defending allowed the opposition to pull 1 back and give themselves a boost. This was short lived as Etone immediately scored a 3rd. A 4th soon followed before a bizarre long range effort from the opposition clipped the inside of the post and trickled in to male it 4-2. However, once again, Etone found the back of the net again to end the first half 5-2. 
At half time the message was clear, let’s now take control of the game. Continue to play our attacking style of football but with more patience and move the ball around to dictate the pace of the game all over the pitch. 
Again a very dominant but more mature display seen us score 2 more goals without giving away any real chances in the 2nd half.
Overall a very commanding display.

On Monday 20^th November a group of mainly student councillors from year 8-10 enjoyed a fabulous trip to visit the Houses of Parliament.  As well as a tour we went into the House of Commons and completed a workshop debating the validity of a ban on non electric cars.  The debate became a lively one.  We also visited the cenotaph and ten Downing Street.  Whilst on route the King drove past us in his car for a royal treat.

We all enjoyed the experience immensely and learned a lot about the houses of parliament, the structure of government and debating. 

Each year we are amazed by the response from both pupils and staff as they show off their best socks for Odd Socks Day.

The initiative was created by the Anti-Bullying Alliance to represent the pride we have in standing out from the crowd. As Harry Styles puts it “There is nothing odd about being odd – It’s far stranger to be normal”.

With that in mind, we are very proud of our pupils as they have shown their courteous and caring values, along with showing their integrity.

This week is Road Safety Week. ‘Let’s talk about speed’ is Brake’s Road Safety Week 2023 theme. The 2023 campaign will start the conversation about why speeding is thought of as acceptable in some situations, what happens when we speed and why reducing speed saves lives. At Etone, we will be reminding our pupils about how we can all use roads safely to protect ourselves and each other.

Road Safety Week

This week we have been standing up to support each other through the Anti-Bullying Week initiative. As part of this we were delighted to once again raise funds for Children in Need as we look to show our Etone Values of being ‘supportive’ and ‘caring’. 

For this our pupils in the Sixth Form have been busy with a delicious cake sale raising money that will go to help children who are in need across the country. Over on the main site we were showing our support with a non-uniform day looking to raise as much as possible towards our Charity Totaliser. 

The funds raised will go a long way to supporting the BBC Children in Need initiative which has been running since the 1980’s as Children in Need. The charity works across the country and beyond organising youth clubs, support networks and care for children who are in need. These include children whose families have fallen on hard times, those who are carers for an adult or sibling and those who have suffered illnesses or debilitating injuries.

We are very proud to be able to provide funds that got towards these amazing efforts and can now reveal we have raised: £751.50 with some donatstion still left to be made. This brings our totals to:

• Total since September 2021: £7,008.47
• Total this year so far: £1,219.95
• Total for Children in Need since 2021: £2,697.69

A big well done to Team Etone!
