Attendance really does May-tter for Phoenix

As you know at Etone College we value education beyond anything else. Every pupil has the right to a high quality education that enables progress for all. As part of that the message and ethos we continue to share with pupils is the importance of attendance. When you consider the impact that poor attendance can have on a pupils learning it’s easy to see why being present each day is important. However, at Etone we go beyond this to install a real love of learning and intrinsic value that pupils themselves relate to their own learning.

On the final week of term 22nd May – 26th May our pupils took part in our ‘Attendance May-tters’ challenge to ensure their form achieved the highest attendance in their year group. Across the week the message of attendance was shared by Heads of House in assembly as they all had their sights set on the Attendance Trophy awarded at the end of term. For Centaur, currently in 4th place they had a mini mountain to climb to overturn the lead that Dragon, Griffin and Phoenix have on them. With Phoenix still ruling the roost the aim was to increase their lead against an increasing Griffin, with Dragon hoping to leapfrog in the battle for first place.

As the penultimate challenge for attendance, our pupils played their role by attending each day and adding to the ‘jigsaw puzzle’ which is their attendance. Across the week our pupils attended 3% more than the final week of Summer 1 Half Term last year. This is really important as attending each day helps relieve stress of missing important information, access the full curriculum offering and develop Employability skills that will help pupils across their lives.

Overall, the week was a red win as Phoenix sweep the board with the highest attendance for each year (7-11) achieved by a Phoenix form. An amazing result for Mr Baggot who extends his lead on the overall competition and steers the House to their third consecutive attendance trophy – Can any of the Houses rally in the final Half Term?

All of our winners will revive

Mental Health Awareness Week

National Mental Health Awareness Week which takes place between Monday 15th May and Sunday 21st May. This year the Mental Health Foundation have chosen anxiety as the Mental Health Awareness Week theme to kickstart a nationwide conversation, encouraging people to share their own experiences and any helpful ideas on how they manage anxiety.

As a school, to recognise Mental Health Awareness Week, pupils will be finding out about how to keep themselves mentally healthy during assemblies and form time in the week commencing 22nd May. We are also asking pupils to accessorise their uniform with something green in support of the week – pupils will be advised about what accessories are acceptable during form time. Pupils will also have the opportunity to attend a wellbeing drop in session on Monday 22nd May – Brew Monday – where they can join their peers and staff for a hot drink and a chat. Connecting with others is a very important part of our wellbeing. Pupils will be given time each day during form time to reflect on our Etone top tips for maintaining good mental health.

To support with the top tips, each pupil will have a booklet which has been designed by Mind to help pupils with learning about these top tips and how to use them effectively. There will be mindful and self-affirmation colouring available in the café during lunch times and Wellbeing Ambassadors will be handing out ‘top tip’ stickers to help open up the conversation around mental health.

In addition to this, there is an exciting art project for pupils to contribute to which is being organised by Ms Byrne. We will also be raising money for Mind, the Mental Health Charity. Members of Leadership will be collecting any contributions each morning in sealed buckets on the gate – we would be really grateful of any support that you can offer in terms of a contribution.

The money raised will support Mind to make sure nobody has to face a mental health problem alone. People need their support more than ever, and demand for their services is growing. Staff will also be making contributions and wearing green ribbons in support. We would be grateful if you would speak with your child about Mental Health Awareness Week and encourage your child to get involved as much as possible next week.

As a group of staff, we will be doing so and you can follow what we get up to on our Twitter next week and our website next week. You will also find a link to a parent workshop that gives helpful advice on how to support wellbeing. The Mental Health Foundation have looked at the evidence for what works to manage anxiety and brought together their top recommendations. A wealth of additional support materials for pupils and parents/carers alike, can be found on our website.

We are the champions… Again!!!

The Etone College Football Academy on Wednesday bought yet again more glory on Etone by winning the WBA Cup for the second year in a row.

The WBA Cup brings in all local teams who receive coaching and support from West Bromwich Albion and their qualified coaches. This shows the quality of the teams and players who were present for the event.

With the glory of last year still ringing in our ears and two teams to represent us our hopes were high and our teams sailed through the preliminary rounds.

Unfortunately, fate dealt us a blow when our teams drew each other for a knock out battle.

Despite this set back and the obvious heartache for one side, the trophy was in site and the lads delivered yet another astounding win.

It matters not which of our teams won but the dedication, teamwork, and values that they present each day on and off the pitch. We are very proud of you!

When you consider the impact that poor attendance can have on a pupils learning it’s easy to see why being present each day is important. Whilst we are proud of the value our pupils hold, we also like to reward them with our attendance challenges. Monday 22nd May brings the our next attendance challenge – Attendance May-tters. During the final week of term the challenge is for each form to achieve the highest average attendance across the school. So it is incredibly important in the build up to half term to make sure you are attending and brining glory upon your House. With Mr Baggot in first place with Phoenix; Griff, Dragon and Centaur really need to apply the pressure to turn the game around.

The highest attending form in each year will receive a special reward and all pupils in those forms will be entered into a prize draw for an additional reward.

National Numeracy Day

On 17th May 2023 Etone College joined in to celebrate National Numeracy Day 2023. The day started in 2012 as a way to promote the values of numeracy and to provide support to ensure everybody has access to developing their basic numeracy skills. Working with employers and educators the event looks to raise awareness and improve levels of Numeracy across the UK.

At Etone our pupils had the chance to take part in some Numeracy challenges with the hope to win prizes and glories for their Form Tutor and Heads of House. Take a look at the challenges yourself and see if you could be a winner.

Staff vs Student – Part 3

With the summer quickly approaching it was time for Staff vs Sixth Form Football and with that it was a great opportunity for the students avenge there 2 previous defeats to the staff.

Despite the weather being somewhat wobbly, the teams were in good spirits as firm fan favourites including Mr Astall and Mr Sheikh took to the pitch for the pre-match warm up. With the referee clarifying the need for a clean and friendly match any grudges were left for the match in hand.

With three teams playing 2 games each the final result was a complete draw with each team taking one game each:

Match 1: Sixth Formers A 1 vs 2 Sixth Formers B

Match 2: Staff 2 vs Sixth Formers A

Match 3: Staff 3 vs 4 Sixth Formers B

So though the overall results were not affected with staff still leading 2-1 the day was a resounding success as it the main purpose was to raise funds for our Sixth Form Charity – The Nuneaton Foodbank.

The final total raised was £140 which will be welcomed by the bank in supporting those around our community in need during these difficult times.

Thank you to everyone involved and all those who donated – Now onto Part 4!

Etone Football Academy Result

Etone Football Education Academy 4 – 2 Invictus Academy
In a top of the table clash Etone was up against Invictus Academy on an afternoon full of rain, sun and more rain. Etone started off bright creating chance after chance but we just couldnt put the ball in the net. One ball over the top from invictus and we find ourselves 1-0 down. 38 minutes in we create a great chance with an over the top ball where the etone striker chips it over the keepers head to get us into half time 1-1.
Second half we made changes and you could see the impact the subs made. Our winger gets a great chance and takes it round the keeper for us to be 2-1 up. Again our striker gets another great chance with back to goal and fires it home to put us a deserved 3-1 up. Invictus then go down the other end about 15 minutes later to make it 3-2. We were still comfortable at this time and with 5 minutes to go our winger breaks through the invictus defence to slot it home and get us over the line.
We now await other results to see if we clinch the title for the second year running (fingers crossed).

TES Awards

We are incredibly proud to announce that Etone College is in the running for two awards at this year’s prestigious TES Schools Awards 2023. With a short drum roll, we have been shortlisted for the following categories:

  • Staff Wellbeing School of the Year
  • Headteacher of the Year

This is an incredibly exciting time for us. Not only does it show the hard work and commitment of the whole school but also recognises the leadership of our Headteacher, Ian Smith and all that he does to make sure that Etone is the very best place for education.

Since joining the school in 2015, Mr Smith has led the school to successfully achieve and maintain an Ofsted Good judgement, secure positive progress in outcomes comparable to the highest in the local area and double the number of pupils attending Etone each year. Our growth in popularity is testament to our standards and achievements, making us the first choice of many parents and pupils locally.

As a Staff Wellbeing School of the Year shortlisted nominee, we take pride in ensuring that pupils and staff wellbeing is at the heart of all that we do at Etone College. With key events in our calendar and the support provided to staff through our Workload and Wellbeing Overview, we are very proud of the package for supporting all staff in school. We are grateful to our staff but in particular our Wellbeing Team, led by Deputy Head Juliet Stafford for the time and effort that goes into reducing workload and promoting wellbeing.

In both categories a shortlist of 6 has been announced which is already an achievement in itself.  The school will be represented at the Awards Ceremony in London in June and, regardless of the outcome, we are already extremely proud of our achievements.

Wish us luck as we head into the countdown to the Awards in June – it is great to see both Etone, and therefore Nuneaton, firmly on the educational map.

Please see the press statement released by TES below…

Mr Smith and Etone College shortlisted for The Tes Schools Awards 2023

The most outstanding individuals and institutions that the education sector has to offer have been recognised in the shortlist for the Tes Schools Awards 2023, the 15th year of the awards. It’s been revealed that Mr Smith from Etone College has been shortlisted for the Headteacher of the Year award and Etone College for the Staff Wellbeing School of the Year award.

The Tes Schools Awards recognises the very best teachers and schools from UK state and independents, including early years settings, primary and secondary.

The panel of awards judges include school leaders, experts and education researchers. The objectivity, professionalism and high standards of the Tes Schools Awards judges and the judging process has helped establish them as a well-respected achievement for any school chosen as a finalist or winner.

Tes editor and chief judge of the Tes Schools Awards Jon Severs said: “With these awards we honour the education community, whom we have served for over 112 years. This year has seen some incredibly high quality entries. So every teacher and school who has been named in this shortlist should be very proud – it’s a fantastic achievement.

“We are looking forward to showcasing, as we do every year, just how vital our education professionals are to every facet of this country. Teachers, leaders and support staff all play such an important role in schools: this is our chance to say thank you for all that they do.”

The Tes Schools Awards Winners will be announced on Friday 23rd June at a gala ceremony at London’s Grosvenor Park Hotel.

coronation

Coronation Celebrations

It was an especially sunny day on Friday as Etone College got ready for the joys of a three-day, Coronation filled weekend. As part of our active citizenship and celebrating our British Values our pupils have been exploring this week what the Coronation means and the importance of it on our nation. With the last one being over 70 years ago for some, it really would be a once in a lifetime event.

In Learning for Life lessons pupils had the opportunity to explore the rituals and scope of the ceremony along with the magnitude of what it means to the UK with once again, the worlds eyes upon us. Pupils also got the chance to take part in the Coronation Quiz where we will be announcing the winners shortly.

Over in the café our catering team cooked up some sublime treats for us including the very Best of British Fish and Chips and some traditional British desserts as we celebrate the crowning of King Charles III. However you are spending your weekend we hope it is a good one and you enjoy to the max.

Flying CCF Training

On Tuesday 2nd May, 4 more lucky cadets had the opportunity to take part in flying an aircraft as part of their CCF Training.

Taking place at an RAF base the pupils got the chance to experience what life as a pilot in the RAF might entail as they explored the hangar prior to take off. With them gearing up in full Top Gun gear it was time for the standard safety drill as they prepared for the flights of their lives.

Taking it in turn each cadet had the chance to fly in the two seater plane manned by thier very own seasoned RAF pilot. During the flight they all took control of the plane centre column to get the full flying experience. Following this there was arial acrobatics from loop-de-loop to barrel rolls and even a chance to experience zero gravity, going vertically up and straight back down.

All cadets landed back safely on terra firma with wide grins and exciting stories for their families. We are very proud of our cadets for showing courage and bravery and can’t wait for the next set of cadets to enjoy it.
