Netball Year 11

Well done to the Year 11 Netball team who took part in the annual tournament on Tuesday after school. They all worked so hard and played well together which resulted in them achieving 2nd place out of 7 schools. They also had the best goal difference out of all of the teams in the tournament. Well done girls, what an incredible achievement, you should all be proud of yourselves, just as proud as I am of you all. – Miss Lower

European Day of Languages

As a recipient of the International Schools award, Etone College strives to provide pupils with a rich knowledge and understanding of the world and the importance of languages.

With this in mind we were delighted to be able to celebrate ‘European Day of Languages 2023’ on Tuesday. Since the end of the ‘Year of European Languages’ in 2001 this event has been held on the 26th September as an opportunity to:

·       Alert the public to the importance of language learning, diversity and the range of languages learned in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding

·       Promote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe

·       Encourage lifelong language learning in and out of school

Each year our pupils look forward to the exciting and enriching activities and this year was no exception. The Modern Languages provided lots of fun things for pupils to do both in lessons and outside of them. First off, our pupils completed a language style escape room as they looked to put their knowledge and skills to the test. Each Form had the chance to win ultimate glory by making sure they were the first to escape as they showcase their Teamwork ability.

Following this Year 9 pupils had the chance to take par tin our annual Postcard Project, where pupils write to a foreign country in the native language to develop a ‘Pen Pal Partnership’. This is a great chance for pupils to practice Communication skills and Caring values which underline what it takes to be an Etone Learner.

Our Year 7 and 8 pupils had the chance to practice conversations in the top 10 European Languages giving them a better understanding of what the international community in 2023 looks like.

And not to be left out even our staff got involved showing the ‘Etone Spirit’ as pupils worked to find out what languages our very talented team speak.

To top it off some of our pupils took staring roles as they shared the languages that they speak from across the globe in a show of International Etone.

Presenting Etone College’s Student Council 2023!

On Monday 25th September a very special event took place as Mr Bonner hosted the inaugural meeting of the newley elected Student Council for this academic year. Each year, pupils in each form nominate someone to be their councillors as they work together to further develop the community of Etone College and enable all to benefit from our school.

Last year our councillors were an imperative part of our student leadership team as they supported Etone with many projects, relayed important messages between the school and pupils and helped to be part of discussions including supporting the new build project.

This year we are excited to continue with those amazing efforts and we made a fantastic start with the first meeting. After taking the obligatory photographs our councillors enjoyed their breakfast complete with a special visit from Mr Smith. During the session pupils received their certificate and were able to discuss some initial ideas including the reasons they were elected by their Form.

Showing self-belief, integrity and communication our pupils are the living embodiment of what it means to be an Etone Learner and we are very excited to see what this year has in store.

During this week our pupils are recognising Genes for Jeans week to raise awareness and support for the organisation who complete research into genetic diseases and work together to create treatments and where possible cures.

In Science lessons our pupils have taken part in activities, learning about Sickle Cell disease and what treatment can be effective. There has also been the opportunity to research other disease and how the charity has helped to support people with those genetic diseases.

With a real show of curiosity form all of our pupils they have shown their Problem Solving skills across the week. Well Done Team Etone.

Etone Football Education Academy – Opening Day win

Nice start to the Academy Season for Year 13

Etone Football Education Academy (WBA) 20 V 1 Derby County Foundation

An emphatic start to the season for Etone Football Academy Year 13 this week saw them sky rocket to the top of the table with a landslide 20-1 win over Derby County. The game started comfortably but Etone couldn’t break the deadlock passing up a number of good chances. After waiting 20 minutes for a goal, 3 came along at once as the floodgates opened and set the pace for what was to come. Goals mostly came from success sliding forwards through in wide and central areas with Attkins, Grimes and Kosperek performing brilliantly in the first half. Half-time the score line had soared to 12-0. Things wouldn’t slow down too much 2nd half either. Grimes made it 13-0 and from there the concentration levels dropped off allowing Derby a cheap conciliation goal. Substitute’s helped keep things fresh and the goals kept coming and Heaths last second goal took the score line up to 20-1. Full scorers list saw a multitude of hat-ricks and Atkins steps up to top scorer in the league after the opening game.

Lights, Camera, Action

On Thursday 14th September Etone College became a movie set as we welcomed Revel Studios into our school to film the next video case study with a focus on our new build block.

Since the inception of the project a strong partnership between Etone College and Alcema (our construction partner) has developed and the video case study is set to cement (pardon the pun) this relationship as a long lasting one.

Alcema are dedicated to providing opportunities for our pupils and it was fantastic to see a group of our pupils become the stars as they worked together with the business to create an impressive feature.

Highlighting the importance of the investment in the area, sustainability of the project and how it will positively impact our pupils education the aim of the film is to share our experience with the wider community.

Along with a number of the Matrix Academy Trust team including our CEO, Mr Smith and our enthusiastic staff the video showcases our determination to provide an ‘Education Without Exception’ which enables ‘Progress for All’.

A big thank you to Revel and Alcema for such an enjoyably day. Our pupils really did enjoy their debuts and we can’t wait to see the end result.

Stay tuned…

Workshops

Help your child revise

As we enter this academic year for many the focus has already turned towards exams. This is certainly the case for our Year 11 and 13 pupils who are preparing for their Mock Exam’s in October.

Following our continued successful programme of sessions last year, we are excited to be hosting our first event of 2023/24 aimed at Key Stage 4. The goal of these workshops is to look at one element of school life consider how best our pupils can be supported both in school and at home. Through a mixture of online and face to face sessions, we will look to develop links between home and school and provide support in a number of areas.

All materials form these sessions will then be uploaded to our website and can be found using the following link: https://shorturl.at/aeCVW

We would therefore like to invite you to the next event:

Macmillan

Macmillan Coffee Morning

On Friday 6th October we are delighted to invite our Year 7 parents in for the Macmillan Coffee Morning. This event is held each year to help raise funds and awareness of MacMillan Cancer Support with the central event leading to our annual Etone College Bake Off.

The competition is held with entries from across our staff who share with us their latest bakes in the hopes of becoming the Etone Champion.

Last years marked the most funds raised and a significant increase in the standards of our bakes with Mr Clinton ultimately taking the crown.

This year we are hoping to make the event even bigger and better with some surprising entries, as we welcome parents of our biggest cohort yet.

If you would like to attend please return the reply slip from the letter that will be given to pupils in the week beginning 11th September.

We look forward to seeing you there!
