On Thursday one of our staff members delivered another conference for NPQSL. The DfE backed course is one of 7 National Professional Qualifications, which support teachers and leaders in developing their own practices. With over 50 members of our staff having completed these courses, we are passionate about ensuring high quality in all that we do. Thursday’s session was a fantastic opportunity to give back with Mr Bowley supporting aspiring leaders in the local community in developing their knowledge of the course.
On Thursday 28th November all the schools from across Matrix Academy Trust came together to celebrate the Performing Arts. It was a spectacular display of talent, showcasing their skills in dance, drama, and music. This event was a celebration of creativity, hard work, and the vibrant spirit of pupils who have worked hard over the past few months to showcase their performances.
This event emphasised the importance of the performing arts in shaping well-rounded individuals. The confidence, discipline, and teamwork required in these artistic disciplines provide invaluable life skills that extend far beyond the stage.
The success of this event is a testament to the thriving performing arts community within our Trust schools. It’s clear that the future of dance, drama, and music is in good hands. With such incredible talent on display, it’s exciting to think about the future performances and productions that will emerge from these talented young artists.
Thank you to everyone for their involvement with the event.

On Monday, 2nd December, the Etone Exceeding Excellence programme took Key Stage 3 pupils to the Christmas Lectures at Warwick University. Pupils were fully engaged in Live Lab prior to the lectures in which they took part in experiments and demonstrations to win badges in Science, Maths and Engineering.
The main lectures were a real treat learning from a Physicist / Chemist how to win at balloon keepy-uppy; then estimating how many presents would fill Butterworth Hall using Fermi estimations and finishing up with a volcanologist explaining how volcanoes function, their benefits and how to protect communities who live near a volcano. One final experiment answered the question 'does a pencil conduct electricity?'
Pupils really enjoyed the evening and developed their knowledge and skills.
On Friday 22nd November, the English Department welcomed back Year 6 pupils from Wembrook Primary School where they became reading detectives. With the help of Miss Benfell, pupils had to use their greater depth reading skills and work their way through riddles and tasks to find the code to the locked box of mystery! It was a fun session with pupils saying that they 'really enjoyed all of it' and one pupil even asked 'can I just live here?!'. I think I'd call that a great success.
This term year 8 students had the exciting opportunity to visit Coventry University for a comprehensive tour of the campus, accommodation facilities, and a hands-on biochemistry workshop. This visit aimed to inspire attendees, providing a glimpse into life at one of the UK’s leading modern universities.
A Warm Welcome to Coventry
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly and knowledgeable university ambassadors who guided us through the day’s activities. The morning began with a campus tour, showcasing Coventry’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the Hub, where students can access support services, vibrant social spaces, and a variety of dining options. The well-equipped library and dedicated study zones impressed students, offering insight into the resources available for academic success.
Accommodation Insights
A visit to the university’s accommodation options was a highlight for many. The group toured a range of student housing, from en-suite rooms in modern halls to shared apartments designed for a comfortable and social living experience.
Hands-On in Biochemistry
The most anticipated part of the day was the biochemistry workshop, held in the university's cutting-edge laboratories. Led by experienced academic staff, the session allowed students to delve into practical experiments, exploring key biochemical concepts. Participants had the chance to use advanced equipment and techniques, fostering excitement about future studies and careers in science.
A Lasting Impression
The trip concluded with a Q&A session where students asked insightful questions about courses, student life, and career prospects. Many left feeling motivated and more confident about their next steps in education.
We extend our thanks to Coventry University for hosting such a fantastic day and to our students for their enthusiasm and engagement. For those considering university options, this visit was a valuable step in making informed decisions about the future.
On Thursday, 28th November, during break time, Etone held a dedicated stand to raise awareness about boys' mental health. This important event, organised by the mental health team, aimed to highlight the often, overlooked struggles that boys face when it comes to their emotional and psychological well-being. At break time students were encouraged to visit the stands, learn more about mental health issues that affect boys, and engage in discussions surrounding mental health stigmas. With an emphasis on breaking down stereotypes, the stand featured a variety of resources, including leaflets, stickers and information on how to seek support.
The stand's main goal was to challenge the outdated notion that boys are less likely to experience mental health issues or are somehow expected to ‘toughen up’ when faced with difficult emotions. Research shows that boys, just like girls, can struggle with mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and stress, but they are often less likely to seek help due to societal pressures and stigma.
It was great to see everyone who attended, participated, and helped make this event a success. Together, we can continue to break the silence surrounding mental health and create an even stronger community here at Etone.

On Thursday 28th November, Etone College once again hosted the annual Historical Association's 'Great Debate' competition. Entrants from right across the Midlands attended, including 2 of our own Year 12 students. Each student was required to make a five minute speech for the question “How can your local history tell a global story?” followed by two questions from the judging panel. We were particularly proud of our student entries, who spoke about the significance of two local historical figures, one from Birmingham, and the other an enslaved person taken from Nevis who was ultimately buried in Oxhill, Warwickshire.
It was a great night all round for our student orators, who demonstrated key employability skills - particularly effective communication, and later organisation when answering questions from the judges. The winner of this regional heat will now go on to the next round, the national semi-finals. Well done and thank you to everyone involved!
Etone College choir were invited to perform at the North Area Music Service concert on Wednesday 27th November at Holy Trinity Church. As well as getting to perform a few pieces of our own (Only You, Gaudete and Stay Another Day) we had the chance to listen to all of the other bands, choirs and even the North Area Orchestra who performed wonderful pieces including film music from Harry Potter and Star Wars. It was great to see a few of our students in the orchestra too - including Lemar P who is the deputy leader of the orchestra!
We even got to meet the Mayor and Mayoress of Nuneaton and Bedworth. The Mayor spoke at the concert about how important music education is and how great it is to see so many of our young people taking part in music.
